Book Description
About the Book
This book provides a systematic introduction to Indian metaphysics through "A Constructive Survey of Upanishadic Philosophy." In the chapter titled "The Background of Upanishadic Speculation," the importance of studying the Upanishads is examined. It explores their connections with the Rigveda, Atharvaveda, and Brahmanas. Additionally, it discusses the Upanishads' perspective on revelation, their chronological arrangement, and focuses on significant texts such as the Brihadaranyaka and Chhandogya Upanishads. The chapter also evaluates the diverse methods utilized in Upanishadic philosophy, including enigmatic, aphoristic, etymological, and dialectic approaches, while shedding light on the poetry and philosophers of that era.

About the Author
Ramchandra Dattatrey Ranade (1886-1957), an Indian scholar-philosopher-saint, hailed from Karnataka and Maharashtra. After schooling, he studied at Deccan College, Pune, obtaining an M.A. with honors in 1914. He briefly taught at Fergusson College, Pune, and later at Willindon College, Sangli, before becoming Head of Department of Philosophy at Allahabad University. Post-retirement, he resided in an ashrama in Nimbal village, near Vijaypura, where he passed away. Ranade's philosophy centered on the cosmological, psychological, and theological approaches to Ultimate Reality, notably elucidated in his work "A Constructive Survey of Upanishadic Philosophy."

Preface
The Occasion of the Work. Ever since the nucleus of the following Survey of Upanishadic Philosophy was presented for the first time to the public of Bangalore and Mysore in a series of lectures in-augurated under the Presidentship of His Highness the Maharaja Gaekwar of Baroda at the time of the foundation of the Sanskrit Academy in Bangalore in July 1915, the author has been bestowing continual attention on the substance of these lectures, and making them suitable for a thorough-going philosophical survey of the Upanishads, in the firm hope that what may thus be presented by way of exposition of Upanishadic philosophy will satisfy every seeker after Upanishadic truth by giving him in a brief, though in a very solid, compass all the chief points of Upanishadic thought in their full philosophical sequence. I must thank Pandit Mahabhagvat of Kurtkoti, now Shankaracharya of Karvir, and Mr. V. Subrahmanya Iyer, B. A., Registrar of the University of Mysore, for having given me an opportunity at that time of placing my thoughts on the Upanishads for the first time before the elite public of Bangalore and Mysore. It seems that the lectures were much appreciated in Bangalore at the time of their delivery, and His Highness the Maharaja Gaekwar advised that "the lectures be printed in English and the Vernaculars and distributed broad-cast, so that the knowledge imparted might be made widely available"
