Book Description
Preface

Philosophy nowadays has become practical and interdisciplinary owing to influence of globalization and efforts on the part of philosophers of international reputation. It is the right effort in the right direction and in the right time to relate Philosophy to the several contemporary issues like global warming, sea floods, animal rights, abortion, cloning, surrogacy, euthanasia, child labour, human rights, legal problems etc. so that Philosophy can be torch-bearer of the society which presently is plagued with varieties of crisis. Gone are the days of arm chair philosophy which was strictly traditional and conceptual. Practical Moral Philosophy/Practical Ethics, Applied Ethics, Pragmatic Ethics etc. are a few names of the latest trend in Philosophy. Practical Ethics or Applied Ethics is the branch of Philosophy which has attracted the attention of the people across the globe. Students and teachers of Philosophy now like to work in the field of Practical Ethics. Already lots of work are going on in this field in various academic institutions across the globe. In this regard it is to be remembered that Practical Ethics is essentially inter-disciplinary which requires knowledge of basics of a few branches of Science, Humanities and Social Science. For example, one should know some basics of environment and medical science in order to lay focus on Environmental Ethicals and Medical Ethics. Similarly knowledge of Legal matter and constitution is required to lay focus or analyze Legal Ethics and issues of human rights. Therefore in this context it is an humble effort on my part to analyze a few contemporary issues in the interest of students and the beginners in the simplest possible language. We have divided our work into four chapters: Environmental Ethics, Medical Ethics, Business and Professional Ethics and Social Issues. In the first chapter we have laid focus on various dimensions of Environmental Ethics which contains Built-in-Environment, Animal Rights, Sustainable Development and the like. As we know the world is desperately looking for a way out of ecological crisis. We have been in crisis arising out of destruction of wild Nature and eco-system which are but human misdeeds. In the second chapter, Medical Ethics, we have made an attempt to discuss the issues of abortion, cloning, surrogacy and euthanasia. The society faces several problems in this regard and the Government has framed certain laws to sort out these issues. The third chapter deals with Business and Professional Ethics. And the fourth chapter contains some social issues and thoughts of Swami Vivekananda and Gandhi. It includes child labour. In India child labour has been a great socio-ethical issue since long which has to be dealt with sensibly in order to improve human resource for the task of nation-building. In this chapter we have also laid focus on importance of Yoga in School education. Thus the book is all about several contemporary ethical issues. The practical aspects of such issues have been dealt with at length and some remedies, too, have been focused on.
