Preface
Jyotisha comprises of three branches - Siddhanta, Samhita and Hora. Siddhanta consists of Ganita or mathematics and Gola or astronomy. Samhita is that branch which is applicational Siddhanta or deals with planetary movements and their connections with collective destinies and large geographical regions and includes national and international events, political happenings, natural calamities, weather, economic cycles and agriculture. The last branch of Hora is sub-divided into 3 sections Jataka covering individual lives based on birth-time, Prasna based on question time and Muhurta where a point of time is identified as good or bad based on planetary positions.
Muhurta becomes important in matters related to the starting of ventures or other activities like marriage, house-building, business, surgery, agricultural operations, travelling and other. There are several classical works on Muhurta such as Muhurta Madhaveeyam, Muhurta Chintamani, Kalaprakshika and other texts which deal with Muhurta principles extensively.
Going through these classical works would often leave me confused when it came to selecting a good Muhurta in my early years into Jyotisha which was sometime in 1969. That was when I started asking my father Dr.B.V.Raman endless questions on Muhurtas. Almost every Sunday afternoon would find me with father explaining to me the ins and outs of Muhurta principles clearing my doubts and which form the content of this book I am sure the questions and answers in these pages will benefit both students and veterans of Jyotisha. Muhurta, father would emphasize, was both prescriptive as well as preventive as a properly chosen good Muhurta could help any activity fare well.
