Book Description
About the Book
'CREDO' ('I Believe') is the title of this affirmation of faith by an unrepentant Indian communist who joined the then illegal Communist Party of India in 1936. A selection has been made out of articles written and addresses given over a long stretch of years, the earliest detail as long ago as 1935 and the latest in late 1992. A great variety of themes has been discussed in these pages, but integrating them is an invincible role confidence in of historic the Marxism-Leninism. The author, now in his 86th year, does not falter in his conviction that the currently apparent debacle of socialism is very far from being the last word in historical development. He shares the great Afro-American Communist W.E.B du Bois' last averment that 'the only possible death is to lose beljef in the truth of socialism, simply because the great end comes slowly, because time is long.'

Preface
This hurried selection out of essays and lectures over many decades the earliest carrying the date 1935-suffers no doubt on account of perhaps being out of tune with current interests and also a certain repetitiveness because of my pervasive belief in socialism which is a running thread in all my writings. I confess that whatever the subject of discourse, I cannot help making, firmly and yet with humility, my avowal of this belief. If this is considered presumption and a kind of intellectual arrogance, I plead not guilty to the charge. Even as I make rather positive averments I stay open to discussion and I abhor a 'holier -than=thou' attitude. It is slightly diverting to recall that I made up my mind regarding this compilation when a good friend, long distinguished in public life, pulled my leg for continuing to espouse a 'lost cause' even after the Gorbachov-Yeltsin outfit had made, as it were, a tour of the world singing the requiem of socialism. My friend whom I do not wish to name, had only twitted me good-naturedly, but it must have provoked me somewhat. I must have felt that I should, before I peter out, leave something like a 'Credo' ('I Believe')-not by any means in a religious but a scientific- materialist spirit. I have no illusions about my kind of writing doing a lot of good but I wish to goodness that, basically it does no harm to the Communist movement where I have found a home, in spite of occasional unhappiness's, for nearly sixty years. I hate to have to say it, but it has hurt me like hell to see that since November 1987, when Mr. Gorbachov launched with elegant garrulity a sort of slow, sly, if for some time shrouded but always simister assault on Soviet socialism, Communist leadership in most countries appeared supine and did not seek to repel and resist what soon exposed itself as a long prepared and craftily engineered assault on the foundations of their faith.
