About the Author

Michael R. Allen was born in Dublin, Ireland, in .1928.. He received his B.A. degree in Philosophy from Trinity College, Dublin, and his Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the Australian National University in 1964. Since 1963 he has taught at the University of Sydney, Australia, where he is an Associate Professor. He has conducted fieldwork in Aoba Island, North Vanuatu, and in Kathmandu, Nepal, working with the Newar people. He has lectured and given-seminars on kinship theory, South Asia, Melanesia, the sociology of Hinduism and Buddhism, ritual, structuralism, and other topics. In 1978 he was an Overseas Fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge and in 1982 he was Visiting Professor at the University of California, San. Diego. His publications have appeared in many journals, and his books include Male Cults and Secret Initiations (1967), The Cult of Humari: Virgin Worship in Nepal (1975), Vanuatu: Politics, Economics, and Ritual in Island Melanesia (19&1), and Women in India and. Nepal (1982).
