Dasha Mahavidya remains under layers to understand their functions in Spiritual Evolution for the practitioner. The practice of Mahavidya under Shakta system is the most unique and have direct link under Shaivism practices as well. Shakti manifested herself in thousands of forms in order to keep the prakriti going and mythologically as and when instances happened with demonic powers and to maintain the system of Prakriti. And eventually in many sects, tribes and little villages Shakti forms were worshipped to protect and invoke the siddha powers which gave rise to Tantra tradition. The origination of Shakti practices is from Cosmic Mother Mahakali through her Dasha Mahavidya.
Mahavidya are not Shakti forms, they are the core wisdom points in different directions and dimensions from where Shiv Kali operates the cosmic flow of time, rules over all conscious and subconscious states. Time-Kaal in dimensions is the function of Dasha Mahavidya. Unknown to many Dasha Mahavidya comprise the power of Shiva and source to invoke and elevate Shiva Consciousness especially in Kalyuga.
The origination of word Shakti in Prakriti is the creation of Dasha Mahavidya. From Dasha Mahavidya amalgamates Tri-Shakti as Adi Shakti Parvati, Maha-Lakshmi, Maha-Saraswati. Tri-Shakti forms Nav Durga which assimilates in Adi Shakti Durga the prime holder of Divine Feminine Powers for human life force and prakriti. Mythologically Aadya Shakti Mahakali manifested as Dakshayani Sati (daughter of Prajapati Daksh) who is the 1st Mahavidya Dakshina Kali and from here further Mahavidya emerged.
The structure of Mahavidya function is broadly divided in two ways. First is on the basis of word Vidya -Wisdom and second on the basis of word Dasha Dimensions. Both Wisdom and Dimensions are contained in the Time-Kaal Parameter which forms the actual core structure and function of Dasha Mahavidya. On the basis of this structure a Sadhak can understand what each Mahavidya does in the Sadhna practices along with what each Mahavidya's speciality is.
Dasha Mahavidya are also the cardinal directions that we have around.
10 All the time there is any one Mahavidya which stays active as a wisdom point that keeps directing the time's flow and energy of a person's action, thoughts and everything's orientation in that moment. This shows that Dasha Mahavidya is "Not Dus Mahavidya Mahavidyas" and it is "Dasha Mahavidya Dimensional Mahavidya in the directions". Hence, Dasha Mahavidya has been graphed and iconography in 10 numbers for understanding dimensions and directions, but exactly we cannot know how many Mahavidya the great wisdom points are hidden in time's flow, in different dimensions and directions. That's why when we talk about Dasha Mahavidya Practice in Shakta system, it is the most unique practice, it is the origination and end, simply not the forms of Shakti. Dasha Mahavidya is the time's motion that's creating energy-Shakti Shakti forms. The prime Shakti form under which all these Shakti formation resides is Durga. And that's how Durga becomes the power of Shakti who is manifesting different forms of Shakti from Mahavidya points Mahakali.
