Book Description
About the Book
The present work is based on the author's contribution to Brandon's Dictionary of Comparative Religion, intended primarily as a manual for students of Buddhism. Although the arrangement of the material presented in the work is in the form of a dictionary, it can also be used as a manual and read in a consecutive way.

About the Author
Trevor Ling worked on Indian Buddhism at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, for his doctorate. He taught Comparative religion at Leeds University and is now Professor of Comparative Religion in the University of Manchester. He has visited India, Ceylon and Thailand a number of times, spending two years in the University of Rangoon and also two years in Visvabharati University as Visiting Professor.

His published works include Buddhism and the Mythology of Evil, Buddha Marx and God. A His-tory of Religion East and West and The Buddha.

Preface
The material presented here was my contribution to the late Professor S.G.F. Brandon's Dictionary of Comparative Religion, published by Weidenfeld and Nicholson in London. I am indebted to Professor Brandon's widow and to Messrs Weidenfeld and Nicholson for their kind permission to repro-duce the material here.

In the present form this Dictionary of Buddhism is the result of discussion with Dr.. Rita Gupta of Northeastern Hills University, who suggested that its publication in India would provide a convenient manual for students of Buddhism. These could be either, students following university courses in Philosophy and Religion, or the potentially larger number of those among whom today a serious interest in Buddhism has been engendered and who wish to make a personal study of this important aspect of India's history and culture and intellectual life.

The present work is limited to the author's area of competence, that is to the Buddhism of India and South-East Asia. Brief references are made to some developments of Indian Buddhism in China, Japan and Tibet, but for any further study of these aspects of the subject the reader will need to consult more specialised work.
