Contrary to the popular belief, "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach", there is much more truth in saying that heart ailments originate from it Rather, one can aptly say that the origin of heart disease is through the stomach. Out of the fifteen major causes of coronary heart disease about ten (cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, lack of fibre, lack of antioxidants and alcohol), about ten are related to the food consumed.
A good number of people suffering from coronary heart disease give adequate importance to their diets and relate it to their heart ailment, without knowing how it affects them. I have faced many queries on diet from my patients and the fact that not much can be answered in a short span of interaction, I thought it will be worthwhile to discuss the issue exclusively on diet for the heart patients.
The five most important aspects of diet of a heart patient are: prepare food with "zero oil", stop consumption of almost all animal products so that cholesterol intake can be maintained at 10mg/day, consume sufficient calories to maintain ideal body weight, include lot of fiber in your meals and, lastly, take adequate antioxidants to prevent the deposition of cholesterol.
Additional dietary advices besides the ones mentioned above are: avoiding of extra salt, exclusion of simple carbohydrates if one is diabetic, consumption of sprouts, avoiding of heavy meals, having invariably a light dinner, avoiding physical exercises after major meals, inclusion of variety in daily intake of food and, lastly, consumption of healthy foods like oat, garlic, wheat bran, juices and soups.
Consumption of alcohol is bad for the heart, because it raises the triglycerides enormously. Lots of people are made to believe that alcohol can protect the heart by increasing HDL levels in blood and it, especially wine, contains a good amount of anti-oxidants. These two aspects (the good and the bad) of alcohol are inseparable. In fact, the good effects (antioxidants and HDL increment) can be obtained by taking hundreds of other foods like fruits and vegetables. Moreover, alcohol is a known intoxicant, often leading to addiction; it damages the liver and mucous membrane of the stomach. It also impairs functions of the nervous system, leads to expenditure of money and time, creates tension with spouse and affects the children. So I do not recommend alcohol to anyone, leave aside a heart patient.
Eating is must for existence and knowing what is good and what is bad is very important, not only for reversing the blockages in the heart arteries but also for preventing it from occurring in future. Eating healthy foods also helps people to control blood pressure, blood sugar and preventing overweight. So this small book is essential for every adult of the modern era.
