The completion of 100 Years of Bengali Cinema is a highly significant milestone for a State that is widely regarded to be India's cultural capital. It is all the more significant for Bengal's film industry as it brings with it justified pride, a sense of achievement and also an optimism for the future.
Kolkata has been home to many of India's and world's masters in the celluloid world. Today, Bengal's cinema finds mention in any discussion on world cinema. There is a whole eco-system that has bred good cinema in Bengal, the well spring of which is a supportive and mature audience, appreciative of experimentation and out-of-the box approaches to cinema making Mindful of the importance of this momentous milestone, the Government has undertaken a year-long celebration of 100 Years of Bengali Cinema in collaboration with the film industry. There is a special component celebrating 100 Years of Bengali Cinema in the 24th Kolkata International Film Festival (10-17 November 2018); a digital portal is being developed as a resource repository, Bengali movies 100 most unforgettable songs will be rendered by today's artists; Adda sessions have been planned with prominent film personalities of today and yester years, a Workshop for restoration and preservation of old films in association with the Film Heritage Foundation is being held; the Cinema Centenary Building (G+8 floors) is being developed to house a Film Vault, Film Archive, Exhibition centre, among other film related facilities; a Coffee Table Book, etc. The Directory of Bengali Films (1917-2017) is also one of the ways to celebrate the centenary of Bengali films.
The purpose of the Directory is to catalogue for posterity the films made in Bengali in the last 100 years. It contains in a nutshell the particulars of the films' duration, year of release, producer, distributor, director, story writer, script writer, actors, music director, lyricist, cinematographer, playback singers, etc. The information contained in this Directory has been collated painstakingly by about forty experts and research assistants under the supervision of the officials of the Films Directorate under the Information and Cultural Affairs Department. Thanks are due to the entire team for this voluminous work.
As we look ahead at exciting possibilities for the State's film industry, we dedicate this Directory to the achievements of Bengal's film industry over the last 100 years. Despite our best efforts, if any factual omission or errors have crept in, the same may please be brought to our notice. Suggestions for further improving the Directory are welcome.
