Foreword The Divine Doctor, written by Dr. N. Shanthamma, M.D., D.G.O. was first published in 2005 by Smt. Nagarathnamma N. and was offered with great love and devotion at the lotus feet of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba on the happy and holy occasion of His eightieth birthday. Many books on Sri Sathya Sai's ineffable Divine leelas, His mission of spiritual regeneration, and His message of Universal love, affirming His Divinity in several forms, have come. Sai literature has been growing in number and in variety. This book, The Divine Doctor, the first of its kind, is a valuable addition to it. Dr. Shanthamma, drawn by the Divinity of Sri Sathya Sai Baba and in implicit obedience to His will, has been serving as Gynaecologist and general physician at Swami's hospitals at Prasanthi Nilayam and at Whitefield, Bangalore, since 10 April, 1980. She has been blessed all along to render medical service to several needy patients in general and to memorable Sai devotees in particular.

Preface Bhagavan says that we have hospitals, dispensaries and clinics in every state now because disease in some form or the other is found in every home. Even small children wear glasses, young people dye their hair, and many wear dentures. This is because the atmosphere in the modern home is filled with artificiality, anxiety, envy, discontent, empty boasting, vain pomp, and extravagance, falsehood, and hypocrisy. How can anyone be free from illness in this corrosive atmosphere! If the home is filled with a sweet fragrance of contentment and peace, all its occupants will be happy and healthy. The physical body is also known as 'Deha', which means that which is consumed by fire on the pyre after the life departs. There is another word for the body: 'Sareera', meaning that which wastes away. While living, it is afflicted with wants and wishes which rob its peace, when dead, it returns to dust. Starting its career as a lump of flesh, it soon takes the form of a tender- charming baby and an active child. It gradually transforms into a strong attractive youth and is later reduced to the pathetic shape of an old person. Hence, it is called 'Sareera'.
