About the Book

The heart-rending sufferings that Dr. Ambedkar had to endure in his childhood proved to be a boon for the whole of India in the end. Being demoralised by the social system in his childhood and with the firm determination to get justice for the so-called 'untouchables', when Bhim Sakpal (his childhood name) reached Bombay in search of higher education, he told a shopkeeper about his being a Mahar. As soon as the shopkeeper got to know that Sakpal was a Mahar by caste, he rebuked him and chased him away from the shop in such a way that Sakpal fell into a ditch. But, the child, who gathered himself together and rose that day, rose so high that he shone like a star in the Indian social firmament. Later, that same Mahar boy Sakpal became 'Baba Sahab Bhimrao Ambedkar', the architect of the Indian Constitution and the Messiah of the untouchables and the downtrodden.

Foreword

Today, our country is going through a time of great adversity. The cancer of communalism and casteism is eating away the whole country and spreading violence and darkness-all around.

At such a time we need a flame, which, rising above all this selfishness, is alight with the pure light of brotherhood. We need that sun of equality which never sets, whether it is day or night, it spreads the light of peace and brotherhood everywhere and by whose heat the cancer of communalism is removed forever from our nation.

If we look into our past, present, and future we will find one and only one name that measures up to these standards. Undoubtedly, it will be the name of Baba Sahab Bhimrao Ambedkar. And it is rightly so, because his whole life was spent in fighting against separatism and untouchability. He was born during that period when the whole of India was under the British rule. Before his birth, Maharshi Dayanand who established the Arya Samaj had died. His organisation was engaged in social reform, education, and the welfare of the Harijans. The All India Congress had also been formed, though at that time the Congress was not fully engaged in the fight for independence. Yes, it was definitely working in the direction of reforms and education.
