About the Book
It is now nearly a century since Sir John Marshall wrote his classic work, MOHENJODARO AND THE INDUS CIVILIZATION (1931) and ever since scholars have been trying to decipher what is written on the seals. The present monograph is a seminal work in this field. The essence of research in the subject is the establishment of a correlation between shapes and sounds. It also spells out a theory of migrations. It describes the life that prevailed in the Indus valley. as can be gleaned from the songs still sung, the tales still told and the lore that still lives. It reveals a life of vigour lived by a virile people who indulged in romance. The monograph describes episodes around which are woven lovers' tragic and beautiful stories. It reveals prevalence of a composite culture. The monograph has raised interesting issues whether the script is of alphabets or of pictures. The authors are Civil Servants. They belong to the tradition of the Civil Servants of Pre-Independence days who, while busying themselves in day-to-day official work, found time to engage themselves in exploring the culture and the way of life of the people. It is hoped that this monograph will open avenues and give leads for further research in the history of India and its culture.
About the Author-1
Arun Pathak was born in August 1935 at Nagpur and educated at Scindia Public School, Gwalior and later switched to Political Science and obtained a post graduate degree in the subject from Calcutta University. He belongs to a family which has served for four consecutive generations in the Civil Services which he himself joined in 1959. He has risen after a fairly long spell in the field as a Magistrate and Collector to the highest rank, i.e. Chief Secretary. He has a wide range of interests in books which vary from Philosophy to Archaeology. His abiding interest in Scriptography and script analysis while amongst tribals the bibliographical notes testify to his proximity to the tribals has culminaed in the present volume. This was preceded by indulgence in calf-love stage poetry. He has tried to rise above the ethos of the dull files and the decaying bureaucracy.
About the Author-2
Nirmal Kumar Verma was born in 1940 at Village Manjhi in Saran District of Bihar. A Matriculate from R. Mitra School, Deogarh (Santhal Parganas), he did his M.A. in Political Science from Ranchi University, Ranchi. He le took up this research in the year 1978. He joined the Bihar Administrative Service in the year 1965. In the beginning he served in Rajmahal and Sahebganj in the Santhal Parganas. Presently he is posted as Executive Magistrate at Bhagalpur. He is interested in poetry and literature. He has special interest in Santhali Culture.
