Foreword
Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values has become increasingly popular with the student community because of its researched publications on the culture and values as also on account of the Students' Interface Programmes conducted in different Educational Institutions both in Bengaluru and outside. The central theme of the publication project is Gandhian wisdom on various issues of contemporary relevance. But it is considered essential to include many other themes and subjects which have social and scientific relevance. Gandhiji himself said that he welcomed advancement of science and technology for solving our problems. That is the reason why some of outstanding scientists of the country were approached for writing about the achievements in the respective areas of their specialization. I was happy to see the enthusiastic response from them to write for the young on scientific themes. I am grateful to the scholars who have obliged the Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values with their contribution. The book is authored by two eminent nuclear scientists Dr.Raja Ramanna, who is household name in Indian Atomic Research and Prof. L.V.Krishnan, former Director of Safety Research and Health Physics programme at the Kalpakkam Centre. The authors have expressed "...It is our hope that this book would help the reader to understand why this country needs nuclear power and why it is considered safe. The accent is also on Indian achievements...."

Preface
This book on the "ELEMENTS OF NUCLEAR POWER" is written as an introduction to nuclear energy for students of Physics at the level of 10th to 12th standards of the pre-university classes of India. While there are many books on the subject, this small book has the advantage of improving their general knowledge without taking too much of their time from examination work. The contents, however, have not been oversimplified and a certain degree of familiarity with basic concepts of science is assumed. It is our hope that the book would also help the reader understand why this country needs nuclear power and why it is considered safe. The accent is also on Indian achievements. The chapter on 'Nuclear Weapons' is intended to provide the reader with some basic information on a topic that is often in the news. The authors wish to express their gratitude to Prof.S.Rajagopal of National Institute of Advanced Studies(NIAS), Bangalore for his help in rephrasing many paragraphs and correcting many errors. Without his help, the book would not have reached its present stage.
