The Centre for Archaeological Studies & Training, Eastern India was set up by the Government of West Bengal in the Department of Information & Cultural Affairs in 1995. Since its inception the Centre has strived to develop researches on the archaeology of the region in all its diversities. Apart from supporting in their chosen fields of enquiry, the Centre also attempted to involve senior scholars within its ambit of activities Accordingly the Centre has created two Visiting Fellowships and invited senior scholars to share their expertise with the younger professionals of the region. This had been a very useful exercise
Dr. Basudev Narayan, a distinguished archaeologist and former Professor of Patna University kindly accepted our invitation and came over to Calcutta in 1997 as the Visiting Fellow of this Centre He discussed at length some important aspects of archaeology of Bihar His lectures are now being published as a monograph for the discerning readers
