The Directorate of Archacology and Museums is one of the oldest State Archacological Departments in the Country. It has a long and rich tradition of more than hundred years in the field of Archacological researches and publications. The Epigraphia Carnatica, Annual Reports, Monographs on monuments and Vijayanagara Volumes published by this Directorate are being used as source material in the field of research all over the Country and abroad.
The Directorate under the able guidance of Dr.D.V.Devaraj has expanded its activities under the various branches of Archacology by taking up new excavations, explorations, organising seminars, besides bringing out several publications of academic interest. The present volume "Epigraphy, Numismatics and other aspects in Karnataka" containing 32 papers contributed by Eminent scholars to the National Seminar on Archacology held in 1985 is edited jointly by Dr. D.V.Devaraj and Dr. Channabasappa S.Patil. These papers throw new light on the history and culture of Karnataka. I am sure this publication will be of immense use to scholars and common readers.
Dr. D.V.Devaraj, Director, and Dr. Channabasappa S.Patil, Deputy Director of the Directorate have neatly compiled this volume. I congratulate both of them.
I am sure the Directorate will continue its academic activities in a commendable way. I immensely thank all the concerned who have endeavoured hard to bring out this volume for scholars as well as common readers.
The Directorate of Archaeology and Museums in Karnataka after completing hundred years of fruitful existence celebrated its centenary in 1985. On this occasion a National Seminar on Archaeology was conducted between 22nd and 24th of December 1995.
The themes of the Seminar consisted of Prehistory, Protohistory, Early History, Art, Architecture, Epigraphy, Numismatics, Religion, Irrigation, Administration etc. It was decided to publish the papers presented in the Seminar in three volumes. The first volume containing papers on Prehistory, Protohistory and Early History has already been published under the title "Archacology in Karnataka". The second volume containing papers on Art and Architecture is in the process of publication. This is the third volume containing 32 papers on Epigraphy, Numismatics, Religion, Education, Agriculture, Irrigation, Administration etc. Owing to certain unavoidable reasons the publication of this volume could not be placed before the scholars and researchers on time. I am grateful to all the scholars who have participated and contributed to this scholarly volume.
I am grateful to the Director of Administrative Training Institute, Government of Karnataka, Mysore who provided the venue and other facilities for conducting the seminar.
The manuscript is neatly typed by Sriyuths S. Jothirlingeswarappa, D.J. Ganesh and S. Subramanya. My thanks are due to them. I am also thankful to Shri Arun Kumar Sinha, Manager, Government of India Text Book Press, Mysore and his staff for the excellent job they have done in bringing out this volume.
