This year Advaita Ashrama is commemorating the 125th anniversary of its glorious existence. The ashrama, envisioned by Swami Vivekananda and founded in 1899, has been quietly spreading the message of Advaita Vedanta since its inception, and will continue to do so in coming centuries. On this milestone occasion, it gives us unspeakable joy to place before the readers the seventh edition of Eternal Values for a Changing Society. This work is comprised of a collection of the choicest talks and writings of Swami Ranganathananda, the thirteenth president of the Ramakrishna Order.
The first two editions of this collection were brought out by Advaita Ashrama in 1958 and 1960 respectively. With the per-mission of Advaita Ashrama, the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth editions were published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai, in 1971, 1984, 1987, and 1994 respectively. The first three editions (1958, 1960, and 1971) were in a single volume; the fourth edition, brought out in 1984, was in four volumes. The four-volume version continued to be published in 1987 and 1994 also. Since then, for quite many years, these volumes have been out of stock. Keeping in view the inestimable value of this collection, Advaita Ashrama is now bringing out its seventh revised edition, which is presented in nine volumes. The reason behind making the erst while four-volume set available now in nine volumes is that the size of the volumes and the font have been enlarged, making each volume easier to handle and more comfortable to read.
Volumes 1 and 2 deal with "Philosophy and Spirituality", volumes 3 and 4 with "Great Spiritual Teachers", volumes 5 and 6 with "Education for Human Excellence", and volumes 7, 8 and 9 with "Democracy for Total Human Development". In this improved edition, spellings and punctuations are as per the New Oxford Style Manual, New Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors, and Advaita Ashrama's Manual of Style. We have tried to maintain a consistency in spellings throughout. All the volumes were thoroughly checked, mildly edited, and processed by Swami Madhurananda of Advaita Ashrama. We are grateful to him for his labour of love. We are also thankful to Swami Shantachitta-nanda of Advaita Ashrama, Swami Arunachalananda of Tiruvan-namalai, Sri Sanjeev Gulati from Delhi, Srimati Arundhati Sinha from Delhi, Sri Gautam Sameer from Mysuru, and Srimati Shakti Raina from Vadodara for helping us in processing and proofreading the work. Without the assistance of all these selfless dedicated workers, it would not have been possible for us to bring out this revised edition.
Swami Ranganathananda was one of the distinguished spiritual luminaries of the Ramakrishna Order, whose life was given to spreading the message of Vedanta relentlessly all over the world. An extraordinary orator, firmly established in Self-knowledge, his speeches were illuminating and powerful, enthralling count-less numbers of people wherever he went. Though steeped in the most orthodox thought system of the Hindu scriptures, he could effortlessly discuss them in the light of modern scientific theories and ideas. This unique capability made him India's spiritual ambassador to the world in the second half of the twentieth century.
