After 12 years of research Hahnemann presented his theory regarding the origin of chronic diseases the miasms. Psora, Sycosis and Syphilis were triumphs in Homœopathic understanding. Extending on Hahnemann's original idea of three primary miasms, Facial Analysis and Homeopathy details the development of the complex miasms - Tubercular. Syco-Psoric, Syco-Syphilitic and Cancer, as well as the three primary miasms.
Extending on the view that miasms are inherited and observable influences, the author discusses how each miasm will dominate physical structure, pathology and mental outlook. Recognizing the lifetime influence of a miasm helps to explain the events and circumstances that surround us.
Understanding that every individual is dominated by one of the miasms, facial features have been identified and matched to each group as part of a ten year research project run by the Victorian College of Classical Homeopathy. Recognition of these miasmatic features forms the basis of the clinical diagnostic method Homeopathic Facial Analysis (HFA) that enables a practitioner to recognize the dominant miasm of every patient.
Facial Analysis and Homeopathy contains a step by step guide to learning how to analyse facial features with patient photos, teaching sketches and charts. It includes the major polychrest remedies and their miasmatic allocation via the HFA method.
Being able to observe the dominant miasm of the patient using a clinically trialled and reproducible system is an indispensable tool for the homeopathic practitioner leading to more accurate prescribing and deep acting remedies. This book contains the history and development of the HFA method and teaching tools to aid the Homeopath in learning and utilising these concepts. Facial feature identification can be incorporated into any classical Hahnemannian case-taking method.
By the end of his life Hahnemann regarded himself as a miasmatic prescriber and made a clear distinction between miasmatic and symptom prescribing only. The further he examined the miasm theory, the more convinced he became that miasms are the key to understanding chronic disease and unlocking a case. Facial Analysis and Homeopathy is an extension of Hahnemann's and other homeopaths such as JH Allen and HA Roberts work.

It has been four years since Appearance and Circumstance was written and the system of facial analysis continues to evolve. Clearer facial features, better case taking and repertorising techniques, as well as a comprehensive understanding of homeopathic philosophy has shaped a complete picture of what miasms are and how they work.
With hindsight, Appearance and Circumstance is a better introductory book into the theory of facial analysis and miasms than it is an actual training manual. This second book is dedicated entirely to practical facial analysis, in an attempt to remedy any of the shortfalls found in Appearance and Circumstance
One of the major challenges of facial analysis is defining normal limits. When does a nose become wide or a bridge indented? What does a cleft in the chin actually mean? While many have found the verbal definitions and photos in Appearance and Circumstance to be adequate, others require more visual parameters. In this book, every effort has been made to ensure each facial feature is as clearly defined as possible, making the system easier to use. Once mastered facial analysis offers a solid foundation for prescribing, and rewards homoeopaths prepared to give it time and practice with a consistency of success generally reserved to highly experienced practitioners.
