The Centre for Archaeological Studies & Traning, Eastern India was set up by the Government. of West Bengal under the aegis of the Department of Information & Cultural Affairs in 1995. Since its inception the Centre has been striving to develop researches on archaeology of the region in all its diversities. Apart from supporting in their chosen fields of enquiry, the Centre also has attempted to involve senior scholars within its ambit of activities. Accordingly the Centre has created two Visiting Fellowships and invites scholars to share their expertise with the younger professionals of the region. This has been a very useful exercise.
Dr. Richa Jhaldiyal, a young archaeologist attached to the Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute, Pune, accepted our invitation and came over to Calcutta in September 2002 as the Visiting Fellow of this Centre. She discussed at length some important issues of prehistory of Karnataka. Her lectures are now being published as a monograph for the discerning readers.
We are thankful to Dr. Jhaldiyal for making her lectures available in the present format. We are also thankful to some of the younger scholars for participating in the discussion and making the programme a success.
