The Fragrance of Bhai Vir Singh is a collection of selected writings of his prose and poetry. His writings stimulate the heart and mind and open our eyes to the Beloved. The book presents essays, poems, and letters of Bhai Vir Singh in new translations as a way of connecting his work with the audience at large.
Bhai Vir Singh (1872-1957), a giant in Panjabi literature, is celebrated as "The Sixth River of Panjab." He was a mystic, poet, novelist, essayist, exegete, historian, editor, publisher, and journalist. His identification with Sikhi's significant concerns was so complete that he was canonized as Bhai, the "Brother of the Sikh Order," very early in his career. He was the leading figure in the Singh Sabha Movement, the dynamic Sikh renaissance in the late 19th early 20th century Panjab. Drawing upon the Sikh tradition of Braj literature for his primary inspiration and cultural motivation and upon the Panjabi literary tradition for its linguistic component, he initiated a new literary idiom distinctly different from both. In this writing lay the beginnings of modern Panjabi prose. His command of the science of etymology and the classical and contemporary languages enabled him to publish critical editions of some of the old Sikh texts.
