The following pages make an attempt at presenting the Gitavada-the way of life that the Bhagavadgita seems to advocate-in a selection from the original. I have tried to select verses on certain topics scattered in various parts of the book and to present them grouped together under certain headings. I have eschewed philosophical disquisitions in which the Bhagavadgita abounds and which have been made to yield so many philosophies, by its commentators. My main concern here has been to present the sort of life the Gita would have us live.
The verses in original Sanskrit are followed by a Hindi and an English translation. I am very thankful to the Penguin Books Ltd. for their permitting me to use the English translation of the Bhagavadgita by Juan Mascaro, published by them. Professor Krishna Kumar, M.A., of the D. A. V. College, Chandigarh, read the proofs and otherwise helped me in carrying through the project. Pandit Bahadar Mal, M.A., formerly Principal, D. A. V. College, Ambala, read the final proofs. I am thankful to them both for their generous help.
