Book Description

Preface

"It must be a disadvantage to write in any language in which one does not habitually speak and think."

-T. W. Rhys Davids, Budhist India, p. 139

The present work is primarily (though not solely) intended for the non-Hindiknowing readers, who are humbly advised to (i) skip over the Hindi (and Bengali) quotations whereof English translations (literal or quintessential) are given before or after the originals, (ii) go through it in a leisurely fashion as they read a novel or a novelette, (iii) leave out the controversial or clumsy portions for a later perusal if time or mood permits, and (iv) read it in a pick & choose manner, selecting the interesting chapters from the 'Contents'.

Most of the base-works on the poet are in Hindi, and I have had to endeavour hard to render the Hindi (-Bengali) quotations/arguments into English, - which has proved an uphill task for me. These renderings have been marked by single inverted commas or enclosed by a capital bracket. English translations of the poet's world-renowned epic, the Ramacharitamanasa (by Growse, Hill and the Gita Press*), have also been made use of here and there; and nothing I owe to others (and I owe lots) has gone unacknowledged. The English translations of the quotes from Tulsidas's other works, are exclusively mine.
