About the CDs

The Vedas one of the oldest Indian scriptures have been the seat of Indian classical Music. Indian classical Music is also said to have been influenced by Indian folk Music. Being both elaborate and highly expressive Indian classical much has withstood the onslaught of time and various cultures. The pages of history also indicate the influence of Persian music on Hindustani Classical music. Based melodically on Ragas and rhthmatically on Talas this rich legacy lays emphasis on exploring the ragas and expounding the finer nuances of the same.

And more popularly as HMV (His Master’s Voice) Saregama was established as the first overseas Indian Branch of Electrical & Musical industries limited (EMI) London, From producing the first song recorded in India in 1902 by the star of yesteryears, Gauhar Jan, today Saregama has evolved into one of India’s premier entertainment content companies. Saregama India Ltd. Is the custodian of over half of all the music ever recorded in India. Saregama has the largest music archive and catalogue in India.

Each of the artistes features in this series is a legend and has contributed greatly to putting Indian classical music on the global map. Having imbibed musical knowledge in the Guru Shishya Parampara they continued the tradition with their students too thus building on the rich cultural heritage generation after generation.

About the Artiste Ustad Bismillah Khan

The Shehnai is synonymous with the name Ustad Bismillah Khan. He was single handedly responsible for making the Shehnai a centre stage classical instrument. His ancestors were court musicians thus offering him a musical environment since childhood. Khansaheb had the rare honor of performing at Delhi’s Red fort on the eve of India’s independence in 1947. He also performed at the Red Fort on the eve of India’s first Republic Day ceremony on January 26, 1950. Khansaheb had a brief association with movies. The melodious sound of the Shehnai in the film Goonj Uthi Shehnai is highly memorable even after all these years. Bharat Ratna the highest civilian award was bestowed upon Khansaheb in 2001. Besides many others he has also been honored with the Sangeet Natak Academy and Padma Vibhushan.

About the Music

In this 3 CD pack the first CD comprises of 4 night ragas CD 1 opens with a pleasant spring melody in Raga Basant. The following melodies in Raga Shankara and Raga Sohoni bring out the genius of Ustad Bismillah Khansaheb. The CD concludes with yet another seasonal melody in Raga Bahar which is a unique jugalbandi between Khansaheb and the renowned violinist Pt. V.G. Jog.

CD 2 opens with a Jod Raga Bairagi Bhairav which is morning melody and is a combination of the 2 ragas Bairagi and Bhairav. This is followed by Raga Puriya Dhanashri a twilight melody. Shyma Kalyan is an evening melody followed by a light ghazal. The concluding melody in Raga Bhairavi touches an emotional chord and transports the listener to another world.

Todi a morning raga heralds a fresh beginning and is also the opening track of CD 3. The afternoon melody in Raga Brindavani Sarang is followed by the popular evening raga Yaman. A brief Jugalbandi between Ustad Vilayat Khan on the Sitar and the Shehnai forms the highlight of this CD which concludes with a high energy rhythmic folk melody Bhangra.

The various shades of this unparalled artiste have been put together in this series thus ensuring the eternal popularity of this evergreen artiste.
