Preface More than a century has rolled by since this great savant, Mahamahopadhyaya Dr. Gopinath Kaviraj was born but time is no measure of the timeless treasure that he has left for pos-terity. During his birthday centenary celebration observed throughout India three years back there was an attempt to delve deep into his luminous thoughts and make an assessment of his contributions to the world of thought through the organisation of seminars and memorial meetings at different Universities of India as well as by academic bodies like the Ramakrishna Mis-sion Institute of Culture and the Sahitya Akademi. I had the privilege to attend many of them and also there-by offer my humble homage to my noble teacher, at whose feet I had the great good fortune to sit for nearly forty years, by contributing some papers on the various aspects of his life and teachings which had impressed me most. They are all like pebbles gathered at the shore of that infinite ocean of know-ledge and hardly gives an idea of its unfathomable depth and incomparable width. The attempt on my part was as insigni-ficant and absurd as holding a lamp to the Sun, which is self-effulgent. Yet his indefatigable ardent devotee and disciple, Jaga-dishwar Pal, who was mainly instrumental in organising these seminars by prevailing upon the academic bodies like the U.G.C., Sahitya Akademi and others to celebrate in a befitting manner the centenary of his revered Guruji, will not rest content with-out publishing my insignificant papers, which he fondly hopes will go a long way in making people interested in the life and teachings of his Guruji. I had to submit to his importunities and reluctantly agree to their publication though I have my doubts about their value. As the papers were contributed at different times and places, there has been obvious repetitions which were unavoidable as they were addressed to different zudiences, yet I believe his luminous thoughts bear repetition in as much as through this process they can illumine the dark chambers of our soul.
