Preface
An ancient book entitled Guide to Gardening (Vatika Tatva Prakash) originally written and published by Late Munshi Raghunath Rai, Retired Superintendent, Revenue Department, Jodhpur, Rajasthan (1935) was available with Dr. Braj Mohan Jawalia. Dr. Jawalia (born on 4th February, 1928) is an enlightened Scholar, well versed in Sanskrit, Hindi, and Rajasthani. He obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. Degree from University of Rajasthan, Jaipur.
He has translated this book in simple English. To his credit, Dr. Jawalia has published 28 books, numerous papers and articles in various journals. Apart from this, he has received several awards; some of the important ones are Maharana Kumbha Award from Maharana Mewar Foundation, Udaipur, Maharana Prithvi Raj Rathore Award from Rajasthani Bhasha Sahitya Sanskrit Academy, Bikaner, Sawai Pratap Singh Award from Sawai Man Singh Museum, Jaipur Meera Saraswati Award from Meera Smriti Sansthan, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, etc.
Dr. Jawalia has been associated with AAHF Rajasthan Chapter since its inception. We are grateful to Dr. Jawalia for providing this manuscript so as to prepare it in scientific form for the use of concerned scientist, students, and progressive farmers'.
This book has been divided in three parts. The first part deals with origin and formation of soil, manures, preparation of seedlings/saplings, instructions to the gardener, methods of cultivation of fruit, vegetable and spice crops with his own strategic methods on the basis of the procedures given and prescribed by our Sages.
The second part covers different aspects based on the knowledge of ancient Sages and the author has used these methods practically which he has described in the first chapter. In second chapter the author has dealt with Upvanvinoda by Sarangdhara while the third chapter covers matter from Vrikshayurveda of Varahamihira.
The third part consists of three chapters, the first deals with the theory of Varahmiracharya, Upavanavinoda by Sarangadhara and according to his personal experience of its application, the author has classified the water resources in different areas. Further, the author has described on indicators of rain, mentioning the statement of Parashara as well as the conversation between Meghaji Pandit and Fogasi and their thoughts about the occurrence of rains based on natural phenomena.
We are highly indebted to Dr YL Nene, Emeritus Chairman, Asian Agri-History Fondation, Secunderabad, Telangana for having inspired and encouraged to translate this priceless work on gardening methodologies based on our ancient literature.
