Book Description
Foreword

Throughout history, the quest for holistic well-being and spiritual awakening has guided countless seekers on a path of self-discovery. Among the many ancient techniques preserved through generations, symbolic hand mudras-powerful gestures offer a unique and accessible avenue for healing the body and mind.

In this enlightening work, Hand Mudras: Transformative Yoga for Health and Wellness, we explore the profound healing potential of these sacred gestures. Rooted in ancient yogic wisdom, mudras are more than mere hand signs; they are tools to balance energies, restore vitality and cultivate mental clarity. Their simple yet potent nature allows anyone to integrate them into daily life, fostering physical health, emotional stability and peace of mind.

Whether you seek to alleviate specific ailments, reduce stress or cultivate inner harmony, this book provides practical insights and guided techniques to unlock the healing power within. By incorporating mudras into your routine, you can experience a wonderful transformation that nurtures both your body and mind.

It brings me great joy and reverence to introduce this illuminating work by Smt. Premlata. She has conducted thorough research on mudras from various authentic scriptures and compiled them effectively to provide comprehensive information to the reader, enhancing their ability to apply the knowledge competently. The illustrations, examples, explanations and instructions are presented systematically, making them easy for anyone to follow and practise.

This book on hand mudras is more than just a collection of gestures; it is a significant body of work in the field of healing sciences and arts. Premlata has approached this sacred subject with purity of intention and clarity of purpose. In these pages, she gently guides the reader towards inner balance, inviting them to experience the transformative power that resides quite literally in their own hands.

It was about twenty-five years ago that I met Smt. Premlata at one of my basic Reiki (Usui Natural Healing System) classes, among about eighty students. She then continued her studies in the Reiki healing system under my guidance until she reached the master's level. The master's level of initiation is reserved only for those who serve humanity with sincerity and dedication. I found in her all the qualities required to be initiated into the master's level. The journey of togetherness as guru and disciple began from then on, encompassing training and practice in meditation, past-life regression, various mental healing methods, Vedantic studies, and attending almost all satsangs on spiritual discourses. She showed great interest and devoted herself to all activities connected to these. Premlata has also transcribed my spiritual discourses and Vedic classes into books and published them. She has always wanted to be engaged in a service-oriented activity

Preface

I have been actively involved in the spiritual learning, teaching and practising of Vedanta philosophy for over twenty-five years.

When I completed my Reiki Level 1, my guru Sri Muralidharan-ji introduced me to the concept of the five elements and their connection to the fingers and hand positions. However, despite his demonstrations and chart-aided explanations, I did not take it seriously at the time.

As my spiritual practices deepened, especially through meditation, I was taught to hold the Bhairava Mudra and the Jnana Mudra. Over time, I discovered that the Bhairava Mudra naturally led me into a meditative state, while the Jnana Mudra brought a profound sense of calm. In just a few minutes, I would feel as though I wasn't even breathing-my mind would become completely still and peaceful!

This continued for a while, but I was still somewhat detached from the practice of mudras, and hence did not make the effort to study the subject extensively. It was about five years ago that my interest was truly rekindled and I began to dig deeper-I purchased books, researched online and watched YouTube videos.

I began experimenting with mudras myself, and that's when I truly realised their powerful impact. I had already experienced the benefits of two mudras, but this exploration took it to a much deeper level. It led to the realisation that hand mudras gave us the power to heal ourselves holistically, as had already been discovered and written in our own ancient texts.

As I continued to study and experiment, I began sharing small mudras with others-simple ones that were safe to practise. It was interesting to discover that mudras help relieve physical ailments, alleviate mental and emotional problems, and aid spiritual growth. However, it should be remembered that though they are generally harmless, one must be cautious, as there are contraindications for certain practices.

I also started looking for formal courses to further my knowledge, but it took me almost a year to find a suitable programme. In the initial stages, I did enrol for a course, even though it was rather too expensive, but then realised that despite the dedicated one-to-one mentoring, it lacked a structured curriculum. Besides, one of the instructors made the honest admission that I knew more about the subject than them. I finally withdrew from the course.

In my quest to learn and deepen my understanding, I reached out to several other teachers, but met nobody who seemed confident enough in their approach. I found some ashrams that offered mudra courses, but most were very basic. An acharya I spoke with over the phone was very honest when I mentioned that I wanted to understand the scientific basis behind the mudras, he told me, 'I don't think I'll be able to fulfil the purpose you have for doing this course.

He mentioned that he would simply be following a particular book. That wasn't enough for me. In my search for a qualified programme, I looked online and found courses, but they were incredibly expensive-some as high as $500, even those offered by Indian teachers.
