Preface
Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values has published in Kannada a set of ten books on various aspects of Sanskrit lore for the benefit of young people to help them have a feel of our ancient knowledge embedded in numerous texts in Sanskrit. They have been written by erudite scholars in the respective fields. The books have been appreciated by the heads of many educational institutions and other members of the public. Swami Ranganatha-nandaji, head of the Ramakrishna Mission and of sacred memory opined that they must be published in all languages of India. This series was called 'Yuvajanarigagi Samskrita Vangmaya' dedicated to the fond and sacred memory of Smt. Godadevi Ramkumar, a versatile personality in amateur theatre, literature, sanskrit and music for which she had dedicated her life. The publication was made possible with the munificent contribution from her husband Sri C.M. Ramkumar. When the Bhavan's Gandhi Centre wanted to bring out English editions of those books, Sri C.M.Ramkumar came forward to help us with his generous donations and made this publication possible. The Centre is greatly thankful to Sri Ramkumar and feels sad that he is no more with them when this volume is finding the light of the day. At our request, Dr. S.R.Sudarshan son of doyen Prof. S.K.Ramachandra Rao, multifaceted scholar and researcher, author of the original book " " agreed to our proposal that it could be brought out in English translation. Another doyen Dr. S.Ramaswamy, Former Professor of English and Fellow of Silliman College, Yale University, has translated the book "Geethegondu Kaipidi" into English. Prof. Ramaswamy writes in his note that remembering Prof.Rao's kindness and affection for me, I thought this was my way of expressing my gratitude to the noble soul, and so agreed to this translation. The Professor has done a good work of translation in the present book "A Handbook for the Gita". We are grateful to Dr. Ramaswamy for permitting us to publish this book in the "Smt. Godadevi Ramkumar Memorial Series". The Centre is also grateful to Sri C.Gangadhara and V.Ganesha for their DTP and cover design and also to the Printers for their good and timely job. We hope that this book will be read widely by our youth and it will help them to develop a sense of pride for themselves and the glorious heritage of our country.

Foreword
The Bhagavadgita is the most famous sacred text for our people after the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. For thousands of years, in all parts of our country, the study, lectures, intense research, daily chanting, meditation and following its precepts, etc. of the this text are happening. Innumerable translations, explanations, abridgements and researches have appeared in all the languages of our country. Millions of people in every generation have discovered the light for their daily living from the Bhagavadgīta. They have realized the ultimate meaning of their own lives by practising the percepts of the Gita. Its popularity has been confirmed by several sources from the time of the Guptas (i.e. 320 A.D.) to the present day. Though there are many "Gitas" in our tradition, Gita means only the Bhagavadgita. In the Mahābhārata itself where the Bhagavadgita is found, in the "Shantiparva" there are Pingalagita, Šampäkagita, Mańkigīta, Bödhya-gita, Vicakhyugita, Härītagīta, Hamsagīta, Parāśaragīta, etc. In the "Aśvamedhaparva" there are "Anugita" and "Brahmanagita." In the Bhagavata we find "Gopigita" and "Uddhavagita." In "Ganeśapurāna," "Ganesagita." In the latter half of "Kürmapurāņa," there are "Iśvaragita" and "Vyäsagita." In the "Yajñavaibhavakhanda" of "Skanda-purana" there is "Brahmagita." In the "Pārāļakhanda" of "Padmapurana" there is "Sivagita." In the "Uttarakanda" of "Adhyatma Rāmāyaņa," there is "Ramagita". The "Devi bhagavata" contributed "Devigita." Thus our people are familiar with hundreds of Gitas. But as Sri Jayatirtha, in his "Prameyadīpika" says if just "Gita" is means only Bhagavadgītā, ("Gitēti bhagavadgītaiva abhidhiyatë") which means this is the main, important one - the rest unimportant.
