Foreword
The Institute of Objective Studies had organised a three-day international conference on "Inter-Civilizational Dialogue in a Globalizing World" in New Delhi 8-10 April 2005. It was a unique meet for so many reasons as it sought to highlight the imperative of inter-religious, intercultural and inter-civilizational dialogue and cooperation in the context of a rapidly globalizing world. It noted that the process of globalization had brought into relief the scale and ramifications of political, social and ethnic conflicts across the world and their horrifying consequences. At the same time, globalization also afforded, thanks to the incredible advances in information and communication technologies, enormous opportunities and prospects for interaction, exchange and cooperation among different peoples, cultures and civilizations.
A number of books were released, including over half a dozen on the issue, written from Indian and international points of view. Prominent among the participants were India's Home Minister Mr Shivraj Patil, Delhi Chief Minister Ms Sheila Dikshit, former Supreme Court Chief Justice, Justice A. M. Ahmadi, former Union Minister Dr Karan Singh, former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Dr Anwar Ibrahim, former Saudi Arabian Majlis-e-Shura Deputy Speaker Dr Abdullah Omar Naseef, Kuwaiti Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Ministry Under-Secretary Dr Adel A. Al Falah, besides representatives from different religious, civil and cultural groups.
Realizing the importance of the papers and speeches the IOS is publishing them in a book form. It is hoped that the views expressed by the participants would help promote the cause of inter-civilizational dialogue.
