This text covers the topics in five chapters, viz. 1. Introduction herbal plants and cosmetics in Indian market: 2. External parts of human body and their different complications; 3. Antioxidants, antiseptics and preservatives: 4. Introduction of topical cosmetics and their evaluations; and 5. Individual herbs with their details in cosmetics formulations.
Role of herbs in cosmetic preparations, modern formulations and focus of Indian market globally have been discussed in this book. The evaluation parameters of the topical cosmetics are also described together with various herbal formulations for hair in terms of conditioner, dyes and shampoos: for skin as creams and lotions; eye makeup products; dentifrices and various mouth wash products; and toilet preparations, etc. which are rarely included in such books.
Kuntal Das MPharm PhD is currently Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry, St. John's Pharmacy College, Bangalore. He is coguiding many post-graduate students in other departments like pharmacognosy and pharmacology. He was a lecturer and has worked in industry as a quality control officer.
The areas of his interest in research include standardization of cultivation parameters of medicinal and aromatic plants, application of nanofertilizers in the cultivation of medicinal plants, tissue culture of endangered plants, herbal formulations and their clinical trials.
He has published many research papers and review papers in reputed peer reviewed national and international journals. He has written chapters in Recent Progress in Medicinal Plants: Vol 19 (Studium Press, USA) and has authored a book Medicinal Plants: Their Usage in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The global scenario totally changed with the plant derived medicinally useful formulations, It drugs and healthcare products, because of National and International market demand. It is estimated that about 70% modern medicines in India are derived from natural products. Medicinal and aromatic plants have played an important role in many ancient traditional system of medication worldwide. Not only that the rich diversity in herbals but also focuses towards the application in pharmaceuticals, agricultural, food industries and even now in cosmeceuticals.
Commercialization of plant base products gaining importance due to the effective therapeutic values and minimal side effects rather than chemical products. But most of the advancements related to herbals and their products are made in this regards either confined to research organizations or revealed scattered way in the research journals. Not much information is available in bound and readily applicable at one place. Focus on that the book entitled "Herbal Plants and their Applications in Cosmeceuticals" has made an ultimate effort to fulfill all the requirements about related plants and their products available in market which are used in beautification. Ultimately, the aim of this book is to provide a solid platform for eminent researchers, academicians, students, physicians, traditional medical practitioners, farmers, manufacturers and exporters of herbal products and marketing consultants from all over the world. All kinds of information were compiled together and represented in this book in a simple manner to serve the basic concept to the readers.
This book compiled with five chapters, viz. 1. Introduction, 2. External Parts of Human Body and their Different Complications, 3. Antioxidants, 4. Introduction to Topical Cosmetics and their Evaluations, and 5. Individual Herbs with their Details in Cosmetics Formulations.
The first chapter, "Introduction" covers a few words about herbal plants and their systemic utilization from traditional to modern medicines. Further, a few descriptions have given about cosmetics and their demand in Indian market. Role of herbs in cosmetic preparations, modern formulations and focus of Indian market globally also revealed in this chapter. The second chapter, "External parts of human body and their different complications" covers general description about external parts of human body for easy to understand by all readers. Different complicated diseases related to various parts of body have also described in this section. The third chapter, "Antioxidants" covers general introduction about the same and their role in human body. Various evaluation methods for determination of antioxidant, antiseptic and preservatives has also described in this section. The herbs that are useful for the above same applications have enlisted with their parts used. Chapter four, "Introduction of topical cosmetics and their evaluations" focuses on the various herbal formulations for hairs in terms of conditioner, dyes, shampoos, skins as creams, lotions, eye make-up products, dentifrices, various mouthwash products, toiletries preparations and their various evaluation techniques. Chapter five, topic entitled "Individual herbs with their details in cosmetics formulations", has enlisted about forty-one individual plants with all their details. Likewise this chapter discussed, plant profiles, vernacular names (state wise names), introduction to herbs, distribution, main chemical constituents, medicinal uses, cosmetic uses, pharmacological action, toxicity studies, clinical investigations, market formulations, mechanism of action in particular formulation, method of preparation of formulations, industries concerned with particular products, storage, dosages, patent related information and references. This chapter is the major focus in which all the latest information have gathered from various sources and recent formulations related to plants with their manufacturers in India.
It is expecting that this book will provide up-to-date knowledge with all types of information to the readers and manufacturers who are relating to this field.
