The Himalayas-the highest mountains in the world. Their scenery is legendary and yet until quite recently has had an air of mystery. With the recent increase in travel to the Himalayas. there is a need for a panoramic approach. looking at these mountains as a geographical and geological region in combination with their many and diverse cultures.
Taking just such an approach, Bob Gibbons describes, in a readable and informative style, the physical features of the mountains and chronicles their geological and cultural history. A general chapter on visiting the region is complemented by separate chapters on various holiday interests for different travellers. For the naturalist, photographer, trekker and climber there is practical and in-depth information.
A final section discusses the protection and future of this unique region at the roof of the world, and describes its natural parks and preserves.
Bob Gibbons' Himalayas is further enhanced by superb colour and black-and-white photographs: to whet the appetite at the armchair planning stage; to add to the enjoyment of the journey itself; and to stimulate memories at journey's end.
Over 80 colour and black and white photographs.
The front jacket photograph shows the view from below Namche to Tamserku in Nepal.
