PREFACE

At the time of evaluation of Santhal agitation renowned writer S.B. Choudhury regarded the agitation as an EMEUTE which was entirely unforeseen calamity and which rose like an exhalation from the earth. Renowned Bengali writer Gopinath Sen remarks in his book, 'SWADHINATA ANDOLANE ADIBASIR BHUMIKA' (Tribals contribution in Indians Independence Struggle). 'The historians of India granted special treatment for Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 where as they had been ignored the Santhal agitation of 1855-56 which is declared the end of British imperialism for the time being. There is no doubt that the discontent of the Santhals against the alien rulers and exploiter sown the seed of freedom movement. The Sepoy mutiny of 1857 is highly related with the Santhal agitation of 1855-56. Renowned historian R.C. Majumder's opinion regarding Sepoy mutiny of 1857, 'it is neither first, nor national nor a war of Independence', actually the Santhal agitation was the first freedom movement of the country and the movement was organized by the Santhals who are still now aborigine and barbarous to the so called civilized people of India. So the so called higher caste nationalist historian has been denied the Santhal agitation the prestigious honour of first freedom movement of the country. In order to secured their self-interest so called nationalist historian regarded Sepoy mutiny of 1857 as the first freedom movement and honoured the first martyr to the starter of the Sepoy mutiny, even though he was higher caste he was a hemp eater. At the time of court martial he himself admitted the truth.

Introduction

Jawaharlal Nehru, first prime minister of India invited a suggestion regarding tribes of India from VERIER ELLUWIN, anthropologist of USA, who came here to conduct a research work about the tribes of India itself. But while he is on his way on foot towards his destination he found a peculiar scene, in which he was so much impressed that he decided to remain here permanently. He married tribes woman and carried on his research on tribal. When India became free Jawaharlal was the first prime minister of free India. Jawaharlal invited a proposal for the tribes of the country from ELLUWIN. He proposed national park for the tribal, but his proposal was not carried out. Nehru left the tribal as it is.

India is a multi-lingual and multi-cultural country. In order to maintain its diversity federal form of Government was formed. Whole country was divided into several provinces and the division is made according to country's existing language, custom and culture, which is proved a Historical blunder afterward. The tribal community of the country's were accommodated in these provinces. Due to this they lost their separate identity and assimilated with the provincial language, custom and culture. SANTALS are the only exception. They neither surrendered, nor accepted alien language, custom and culture, but preserve their own identity and maintain their integrity. This is the cause why the scholar, intellectual, anthropologist and many other interested about them. But there is no concrete or written evidence left about them. Under the circumstances the folklore which is composed by their forefather will be a helpful content for those, who are interested about them.

In the beginning there was no land. There was only water across the world. This story which is composed and contemplated by the fore father of the SANTALS is not a mere description of the past i.e. pre-historic days, but a glare instance of social science. Scientist of modern ages proved beyond doubt that in the beginning there was only water. But according to them the water was hot. Whatever it may be there is only water it is true. The folk lore which is composed by the fore father of the SANTAL is contemplated from the true fact. From the consequent description it is to be proved beyond doubt. The SANTALS are the aboriginal race of the India. CHOTANAGPUR plateau is their cradle land. According to so called civilized people of India they are barbarous, uncultured and illiterate. But from the above mentioned folk lore it is proved beyond doubt that SANTALS are most civilized and those who called them barbarous, uncultured they themselves are barbarous and uncultured. They are in credit from the SANTAL itself. They are in borrowed plumes.
