Preface

We are delighted and thrilled to present an extraordinary collection of works by Annapürnă Devi Dasi (Anna Johansson) in this unique exhibition entitled Ilhiminations from the Ramayand, Featuring over 300 exquisite watercolors and ink works on paper, this exhibition offers a window into the spiritual world by depicting the marvelous pastimes of Lord Rama as narrated by the sage Valmiki in one of the world's greatest literary works, the Ramayana.

The Ramayana has captivated the Indian subcontinent for countless generations and has served as a sacred and revered text for millions of Hindus of various spiritual traditions, particularly the Vaishnava traditions that worship Lord Rama as an important incarnation of Lord Vishnu, or Krishna.

This exhibition in the MOSA galleries at Radhadesh is accompanied by a wonder-ful book of the same title and a rich cultural program for the opening, with dance, music, and theater related to the theme of the Ramayana. This book, co-published by MOSA and Niyogi Books from India, features an essay by Professor Graham Schweig, elucidating the significance of the Ramayana in the Vaishnava traditions and in the broader Hindu culture. ISKCON's founder, His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, not only established the worship of Lord Krishna by installing Deities of Lord Krishna in many ISKCON temples worldwide but also installed Deities of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman in places such as Mumbai, Delhi, London, Washington DC, Ahmedabad, Towaco New Jersey, Brazil, Seattle, Spanish Fork, and others. Scholar and art historian Molly Kaushal summarizes the profound impact the Ramayana has had on Indian culture throughout history, from the classical period to the modern and contemporary era.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to artist Annapurna Devi Dasi for entrusting MOSA to be a responsible and dynamic custodian of her extensive body of artwork.

ensuring the continuation of her artistic and spiritual legacy for future generations of ISKCON devotees, Hindus, and art lovers in general. Most of the works in this remarkable collection were created as illustrations for the Sita's Fire trilogy, written by Annapürna's daughter, Vrinda Sheth. In addition to these illustrations, Annapurna contributed several new works to complement the collection and this book. The daughter/mother collaboration that was so central to the creation of the Sita's Fire trilogy has continued for this publication, Illuminations from the Ramayana, as Vrinda Sheth provides short texts describing the key characters, places, and pastimes in the Ramayana to enhance the artwork and offer readers insight into Valmiki's beautiful epic.

We would also like to thank all those who made this project possible: author Vrinda Sheth; scholars Prof. Graham Schweig and Molly Kaushal; book designer Raghu Consbruck of Eight Eyes; book publisher Bikas Niyogi; and the entire MOSA team based at Radhadesh. We are especially grateful to Rupa Manjari Devi Dasi for her generous contribution to the success of the exhibition, cultural program, and book. We also wish to thank Santosh Kedia, Vijay Goel, Kishore and Mayur Shah for their invaluable support.
