About the Book The book provides firsthand insights into the ancient Churches of the East, notably the Syrian Christians of Travancore, suggesting authenticity. Despite facing historical challenges, they symbolize a light in darkness. Chapters explore topics like St. Thomas in South India, early writings, objections, and manuscript translations. Bishop Wilson's 1843 charge underscores the significance of these communities, aiming to spark sympathy and interest in their history. It emphasizes their pivotal role in the religious narrative of the region, shedding light on their enduring legacy amidst adversity.

About the Author Joseph William Richards (1864-1921) spent 35 years as a C. M. S. Missionary in Travancore and Cochin, ministering to the Hindu community. Additionally, he served as the honorary Chaplain to the Bishop. Notably, Richards authored "The Indian Christians of St. Thomas: Otherwise Called the Syrian Christians of Malabar A Sketch of their History" in 1908, offering insights into their past and present, alongside a discussion on the legend of St. Thomas.

Preface AT the request of my friend, the author of this book, I write these few lines to introduce him and his work. Dr. Richards has been a missionary of the Church Missionary Society in Travancore since 1871. He was at different times Vice-Principal of the Society's College at Kottayam, Principal of the Cambridge Nicholson Theological and Training Institution at the same place, and Missionary-in-Charge of at least three of the Mission districts. He was one of the revisers of the Malayalam Bible, the chief reviser of the Prayer Book in the same language, and for these important services Archbishop Temple conferred on him the Lambeth D.D. He was also editor of the Travancore Diocesan Gazette. He has well studied the past history of the ancient Syrian Church of Malabar, and has been intimately cognizant of its various divisions and developments in recent years.
