The movement for decolonization in Asia had a unique beginning in India's struggle for freedom. The combined effect of both the violent and non-violent means produced the desired result in the domain of political struggle. One of the niceties of the Indian national movement is obviously its regional variations which proved how a pluralistic society could be united for a common cause even with different political and ideological currents. Various district level studies have opened up new dimensions in our understanding of the national movement's core and peripheral connection. Dr. Md. Khairul Anam's excellent book, based on his Ph.D. thesis, no doubt, has focused new light on a district which had long been remained under various misconceptions. The district of Murshidabad had generally been regarded as an area where the Indian national movement did not find much response. Dr. Anam's credit lies in the fact that through his painstaking research work from 1988 to 1995 he has very successfully unearthed new facts which have historically established the district's glorious role in India's struggle for freedom.
Actually historians like Ramesh Chandra Majumdar and Sumit Sarkar remained to some extent sceptical about the role played by the district of Murhsidabad in the national movement. Dr. Anam with the help of original records has brought out in details the different aspects of the freedom movement in the said district. What a remarkable role had been played by the Rajas like Manindra Chandra Nandy and institution like Krishnath College could be gathered from this very important book. The readers will also be delighted to note that how Dr. Anam with scholarly conviction has given a vivid picture of the Indigo Revolt in this district so long unnoticed by the scholars. This narrative from 1905 to 1947 has made it amply clear that district had witnessed the participation in the freedom movement of exceptional individuals as well as persons ranging from the elites to subalterns.
The history of the freedom movement in India with all its dimensions is unique treasure house for a researcher and hence every opportune moment should be utilized to review the history of the freedom movement of India. Much has been said, studied and written about our liberation movement in general from the pan-Indian perspective. Yet there remain many things which are still untold. There is an urgent necessity for researching local history of India struggle for freedom on micro level. It is only recently that micro history has attracted the students and researchers. Mere composition of chronology of chief events does not necessarily promote our awareness of the nationhood. We, who live in India, should know the toil and blood of every locality or region that went into the making of our long cherished independence.
The role of the district of Murshidabad has not unfortunately been duly recognized by our historians. Very little attempt had hitherto been made to examine the aspirations and thoughts of the people of Murshidabad in different phases of our freedom movement. On the contrary, most of the historical writings on Murshidabad have often been dominated by a set idea that as a backward district Murshidabad had no importance in our national liberation struggle. But this book, which is the result of untiring research works of more than seven years, shows that there had been a tremendous impact of the changing political movements of India on the district of Murshidabad. Moreover, I want to present in this book a comprehensive picture of the history of the freedom movement in Murshidabad which was long overdue.
I have tried to avoid minutest details so that the book would not be unnecessary descriptive. But inference of proper analysis makes certain amount of description imperative. However, while writing this book I have followed mainly 'Historical Analytical Method'. No particular ideological orientation has been imputed to the study. As far practicable I have tried to maintain objectivity and authenticity.
