In the era of digital learning, an all-inclusive web space dedicated to knowledge resources in and about Indian languages, is a compelling necessity. We are living in a period of human civilization wherein the act of knowledge dissemination is gradually resorting to electronic devices. India is proud of her rich cultural heritage, knowledge traditions and linguistic diversity. It is therefore of high importance that a highly dynamic and interactive digital platform is provided to Indic languages and associated resources. The Ministry of Education, (formerly, Ministry of Human Resource Development) Government of India with the aim to impart knowledge in and about Indian languages launched the Bharatavani Web Portal and a dedicated mobile application of text searchable dictionaries to facilitate researchers, academicians and faculties who are interested to acquire knowledge in and about Indian languages and the knowledge systems derived out of it.
I am very delighted to state that over the last four years Bharatavani could aggregate, digitise and spread a huge wealth of knowledge for the direct benefit of the people of India. The domains of available resources incorporate broader categories like encyclopedia, dictionaries, language learning materials, textbooks, multimedia (audio & video) spread across 92 languages. Being the world's largest hub of dictionaries and glossaries in various mother tongues and disciplines, Bharatavani has catered to the academic needs of people from various parts of our country. The target to provide a digital recognition to 121 Indian languages is not far-fetched and Bharatavani is working at its fullest strength to attain the same. The exquisite collection of knowledge texts of close to 6000 resources is the outcome of successful overcoming of all the logistic hurdles and constant persistence to work towards the goal.
"Indian Languages in Digital Space: Sharing Knowledge Through Web Portal & Mobile App' traces how the Ministry of Education, (formerly, Ministry of Human Resource Development) Government of India's initiative, Bharatavani is contributing towards making the presence of Indian languages felt in the digital space. Having launched in the year 2016 and proudly managed by the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Bharatavani is already home to more than 5500 knowledge resources spread across 92 language domains. With 200 digital dictionaries about various subjects in multiple Indian languages and more to be added, Bharatavani portal and mobile application have become the world's largest repositories of text-searchable dictionaries and glossaries catering to the daily needs of academicians, researchers, faculties, students and citizens of Indian in general.
The book is categorised into four chapters. The first two chapters, namely, 1) Indian Languages in Web Space; 2) Mother Tongue and its Importance, deal with how Indian languages can be integrated in web space, the challenges and difficulties, methods of digital care of indigenous knowledge resources, why digitisation and archiving are absolute necessities to preserve cultural and linguistic heritage, status of mother tongues in Indian and the constitutional provisions granted to them.
