Acknowledgments I wish to record my grateful thanks to the United States Educational Foundation for asking me to be Director of the Seminar on Indian Response to American Literature and subsequently making it possible for me to collect and edit the papers read at the Seminar. But for my colleagues who attended the Seminar from various universities and centres of learning, neither the Seminar nor this volume would have materialised and I thank them sincerely. I am especially grateful to Dr. B. Gopala Reddi, Governor of Uttar Pradesh who at short notice very kindly agreed to inaugurate the Seminar and, as one who knows the world of letters from inside, gave a good start to the Seminar. Sri P. D. Sayal of USEFI, and Sri S. Krishna Murthy of the Department of English in my University have helped me in a number of ways in preparing the typescript for the press. The Manipal Power Press has responded to my request by bringing out the volume in about three months. But the book could not have appeared so expeditiously without the co-operation of Sri B. Damodar Rao who read the proofs with me and, living close to the press, be had to shoulder many other responsibilities.
