Book Description
About the Book
This volume critically evaluates and maps German philosopher Immanuel Kant's influence twentieth-century prominent Indian philosophers. Kant, as a revolutionary philosopher, augmented the well-known Copernican Revolution in Western philosophy. His philosophy radically transformed the nature of man from being a mere spectator of the natural world and a mere subject in the moral world to an active agent in the creation of both the natural and moral worlds. His philosophy has deeply influenced the divergent philosophical traditions of modern times. Transcendental idealism and empirical realism are the hallmarks of Kant's philosophical thought, and the former has culminated into the German idealism of J.G. Fitche, F.W.J. Schelling, and G.W.F. Hegel. He also kindled the concept of absolute idealism of T.H. Green, F.H. Bradley, Bernard Bosanquet, and J.M.E. McTaggart. Kant influenced immensely in shaping up the philosophical thoughts of Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, among others. Taking a cue from different Indian philosophical systems, frontline Indian philosophers of the twentieth century such as K.C. Bhattacharyya, J.N. Mohanty, T.R.V. Murti, Daya Krishna, and others have deeply delved into the Kantian philosophical world view and have critically added value to the Kantian thought, thereby making this volume a collector's issue.

Preface
THE present work offers a comprehensive exploration of the profound impact of Immanuel Kant's philosophy on a distinguished group of twentieth-century Indian thinkers. It delves into the multifaceted engagement of Indian philosophers with Kantian legacy, revealing a diverse range of reaction from affirmation and critique to the pursuit of extending his unfinished project. Their interactions with Kantian thought are not singular in approach; rather they present a rich topestry of perspectives. Some scholars have analysed Kant through with analytical lens, while others have approached his work from a phenomenological standpoint. A notable trend among a few is the endeavour to align Kantian philosophy with the principles of Advaita Vedanta. The attempt to understand the Kantian philosophy in an analytical framework which can be easily gleaned in the philosophical writings of K.C. Bhattacharyya, Daya Krishna, and P.K. Sen. Some Indian scholars have tried to offer the phenomenological dimension to it. Here we can easily mention the names of J.N. Mohanty, Kalyan Kumar Bagchi and others. There is also a very prominent tendency of recent Indian philosophers to push the Kantian philosophy in the Advaitic lines. This kind of trend is shared by several Indian scholars like A.C. Mukerji, S.S. Roy, and S.L. Pandey. Hence, the objective of this work is to furnish a unique vantage point-viewing Kant through the prism of Indian philosophical thought.

Introduction
THE present work, entitled Indian Responses to Kant: Philosophical Synergies and Conflicts, is an attempt to map Kantian influence on twentieth-century Indian philosophers. Immanuel Kant has created a revolution in the realm of philosophy which is designated as Copernican Revolution. He has radically transformed the nature of man from human being as mere spectator of the natural world and mere subject in the moral world to an active agent in the creation of both. He played the role of a critical mediator between rationalism (dogmatism) and empiricism (scepticism). Apart from that, Kant is not only concerned to curb the pretensions of dogmatic metaphysics to give us suprasensible knowledge, but also concerned to curb the pretensions of sensibility to be coextensive with the real. The Kantian philosophical thought has deeply influenced the divergent Western philosophical traditions of the present era. His philosophy is interpreted as transcendental idealism and empirical realism. In transcendental idealism, the formal elements in experience the categories of understanding are transcendentally ideal that is subjective and a priori. But at the same time it is empirical realism because the contents of experience are derived from things-in-themselves (noumena). The Kantian idealism culminates into the German idealism of J.G. Fichte, F.W.J. Schelling, and G.W.F. Hegel.
