Book Description
Foreword

Jainism was an important religion of Karnataka and its contribution to the Kannada literature and art is noteworthy. The present work on the Jaina art and architecture at Vijayanagara is confined to the Vijayanagara city. It depicts the jainism in the capital with illustrations and probe the religion with the inscriptions.

The Directorate of Archaeology and Museums is happy to present the work of Sri H.T.Talwar, Assistant Director. I wish him success in bringing out many more works.

We are grateful to Dr. V.Prakash, Director of Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore for taking up the printing work. Sri K.A. Ranganath, Head and Sri S.Umesh, Technical Officer of FOSTIS of CFTRI have produced this publication with quite an attractive get up and my thanks are due to all of them.

Preface

Jainism played an important role in the political and social life of the people in the Deccan from the earliest time to the Thirteenth Century A.D. But during the Vijayanagara period the society was of complex nature in its religious composition. There were various sects, which were actively and competitively practiced. True to its nature and inherent ideas enshrined in the Indian culture, in general there was religious harmony among the people of various sects like the Vaishnava, Saiva, Veerasaiva, Jaina etc. The present work is an attempt to present the Jainism and Jaina Art and Architecture at Vijayanagara.

The work was for doctoral thesis but owing to certain unavoidable reasons forced to bring out in the form of this publication.

I am thankful to my Director Sri M.L. Shivashankara for contributing the foreword. A number of friends and colleagues have helped in this venture. Among them mention may be made of Dr. C.S.Patil, Deputy Director, Dr. R.Gopal, Deputy Director, Sri. T.S.Gangadhar, Curator, Mysore Palace, Sri N.V.Joshi, Assistant Director of this Directorate.

I am immensely thankful to Dr. John Fritz, Dr. George Michell, Prof. A.V.Narasimha Murthy. Dr. A.Sundara, Dr. Rangaraju, Dr. Krishnappa, Dr. M.S.Krishna Murthy and Dr. M.P. Mahadevaiah for valuable guidance and co-operation in the above work.

My thanks are also due to Sri Balaraja Naidu for photographs, Sri R.H.Kulkarni for recopying the drawings of Dr. George Michell and Sri S.Jothirlingeswarappa and Sri N.Subramanya for preparing the type script neatly on the computer.
