1 must first express my grateful thanks to the Indian Council of Philosophical Research, New Delhi, India, whose generous sward of a Senior Fellowship enabled me in preparing a post-doctoral thesis on "Interpretation of Text" which again culminated into this book.
The purpose of this work is to bring out the importance and significance of interpretation which we perform almost every time and everywhere while facing any text whatever.
Interpretation is analyzing what a text means. The usual object of interpretation is "meaning". Thus while in text-interpretation we try to answer the question "what does the text mean?" Interpreting a text as a product (including an authorless text or absence of the author) faces meaning with multiple possibilities. It is to be noted that hermeneutics is widely defined as a discipline of interpretation theory, for, it includes the entire framework of the interpretive process which encompass all forms of communication whether written or verbal or nonverbal.
My most persistent intellectual debt is to my beloved teacher and advisor former Professor Kalyan Sentgupta of the Department of Philosophy, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, who inspired me in every way and from whom I have never ceased to learn.
My thanks go to Professor Bhelke Head of the department of Philosophy, Pune University, India, who very kindly gave me an access to the departmental library for using necessary books regarding this work, and helped me by discussing important points with me in Indian Philosophy concerning my work. I am greatly profited from the discussions that I had with Professor D. N. Tiwari, Head of the department of Philosophy, Banaras Hindu University, India, in Mimamsa Philosophy.
