This recent work by Dr. Rangankanti Jana, curator Bardhaman University Museum and Art Gallery on the cutlery Industry of Kanchannagar in Bardhaman is a good picturesque history. The text is short and tidy and as a curator he has illustrated this by valuable pictures taken by himself on numerous visits το Kanchannagar. The pictures tell the history of the rise of cutlery Industry from very humble origin to a middle-sized industry which reached the Canning Street market. Their products of native scissors and cutleries are of excellent quantity and sold very well against the competition of sheffield manufactures supported by British rule. The white-washed Indian gentry backing of the foreign products in complete disregard of 'native manufactures' led to its erosion and disappearance.
This reminds us of the history of early capitalist development in India priors to British rule which came to a take off stage on the eve of British rule as written by soviet historians chicherov, Levskovsky Pavlov, Rastiannikov and echoed firmly that British Rule arrested this development, Kanchannagar reminds us of this potential. Jana has done well to highlight this tragedy.
