Book Description
From the CD

Hare Rama Hare Krishna is the simplest and yet most potent spiritual chant in India. In this dhun or melodic chant, 'Hare'means the devotional energy of God, and 'Krishna'and 'Rama'mean "the supreme personality of Godhead".

It is believed by all Lord Krishna devotees that the easiest way to reawaken our dormant Krishna consciousness or Love for God, is by chanting the mantra, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Hare Hare; Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

These 16 syllables are called the "maha-mantra," or "great chant". Whereas the usual bhajan is usually performed by a soloist, the dhun usually involves the audience. The simplicity and spareness of the dhun is thus simpler to sing and assimilate in our daily lives.

The poetic form of the dhun is a musical version of a chant. A slow repitition of the chant, the dhun induces a peaceful relaxed state of mind. It induces a sense of heightened spiritual oneness with the universe. Hare Rama Hare Krishna, sung by the incomparable Shankar Mahadevan invites you to the serene universe that all of us deserve but few rarely manage to achieve.

Shankar Mahadevan Born in a family of music lovers, Shankar Mahadevan started playing the Harmonium at the age of four and soon learnt to play the Veena. He learnt classical music from his guru T.R.Balamani and after acquiring a sound classical base, he learnt to sing Marathi Bhajans, Abhangs and Bhavgeets from the reputed musician, Shrinivas Khale.

Forever looking to break new grounds as a singer and musician, Shankar soon ventured into the realm of fusion music. His immense knowledge of music and his experimental and innovative style have, in recent years, earned him immense recognition. He has not only taken his music to new levels but he has also established himself as a musical genius of international standards.

Shankar Mahadevan is a busy man today. His packed days of activity are spent pursuing his brightest muse- his music.

It is believed by all Lord Krishna devotees that the easiest way to reawaken our dormant Krishna consciousness or Love for God is by chanting the Mahamantra Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare. 'Hare'meaning the devotional energy of God and 'Krishna'and 'Ram', "the Supreme Personality of Godhead".

A slow repetition of this simple yet potent chant, the dhun induces a sense of heightened spiritual oneness with the universe.
