The present work has grown out of my Ph.D. dissertation submitted to Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. This study is an enquiry into the labour movement in Tamilnadu during the years between 1918-1933. My enquiry is confined to the factory and railway workers. Importance is given to their struggles.
I have had to work within certain limitations imposed by the non-availability of mill records, labour union files and private papers of labour leaders. Unfortunately, B. Shiva Rao's private papers throw light only on the events from 1936 onwards.
