Book Description
About the Book:

The Land of the Sherpas is about the farthest corner of Nepal inhabited by the cheerful and lovable Sherpas who are known for their Himalayan climbing expedition. The book, throwing light on the various aspects of the Sherpa culture also gives the readers a glimpse of what the author call 'the immensity of Asia'. Her magnificent photographs and perceptive essays in this book are reminiscent of her earlier book FORBIDDEN JOURNEY. Maillart has, through this marvellous book, carved out a niche for herself as one of the greatest travellers of the world.

About the Author:

ELLA MAILLART gained her taste for open air life and her first knowledge of mountain people sailing on the Lake of her native Geneva and skiing in the Alps. She once sailed for Switzerland in the Olympic games and four times represented her country in world skiing championships. On land her first expedition was when she crossed on foot the central range of the Caucasus. In the 1930's, with four chance-met Soviet scientists, she visited the highest valleys of the T'ien Shah mountains in Turkestan, on her way back visiting Tashkent and Samarkand.
