This volume comprises eleven articles presented in the National Seminar on 'Language Disorders & Therapeutic Procedures' organized at the International School of Dravidian Linguistics, V.I. Subramoniam Memorial ISDL Complex, Menamkulam, Thiruvananthapuram in March 2015. The contributors include Physicians, Speech therapists, Linguists and Researchers.
The main attention of this book is on the problems faced by differently abled children in the acquisition and performance of language. At the same time, some general problems faced by the normal children are also discussed. Speech problems of the differently abled children are a vast area and for their analyses and solutions multi-disciplinary researches are required. All over the world this field of study has acquired much importance from the later half of the 20th century. In India too, there are some prestigious speech and hearing institutions which give special attention to the speech problems of differently abled children. In this context, I have to remember gratefully the Late Prof. V.I. Subramoniam, Hon. Director, ISDL and Late Dr. Mohan, Sreechitra Institute, Thiruvananthapuram for starting a Speech Defects Unit and a Clinic for differently abled children at the ISDL campus, Thiruvananthapuram in 1994. It functioned well for a few years, but later a gradual decline has taken place. Anyway, we are now taking earnest efforts to revive its functions and the seminar on 'Language Disorders & Therapeutic Procedures' and the publication of this book are just a beginning towards this goal.
