Book Description
Foreword

Mahabharatha is the monarch of the kingdom of books. It is a lofty peak in the world of letters. It is the first ever encyclopedic work of philosophical tenets in the entire realm of literary world. An encyclopedia encompassing the whole range of human values and failures. Though basically an epic of spiritualism, it is at the pinnacle of knowledge with several branches like political science, sociology, psychology and every other intellectual genre as its components. None can ask about its contents.

There is nothing which it does not contain. It contains everything that is elsewhere. Its greatness is that whatever it does not contain, does not exist anywhere else. On the one hand, it is the most interesting saga of monumental proportions in the entire world and on the other, it contains a multitude of episodes which evoke excitement at each and every stage. Regarding the variety of roles it portrays, it can be compared with only itself. It is an encyclopedia which exposes the multifarious traits of human character in all its glory and mystery.

It is a treasure house of portrayals and narrative excellence. It is a crucible of spiritual principles and tenets. As per its own claim, it is a "flame of knowledge and wisdom. Acharya Madhwa's Mahabharata Tatparya Nirnaya is an unprecedented critique of the great epic which reveals its profundity in all its glory. This is a great literary work containing more than 5000 verses spread over 32 chapters which along with Mahabharatha reveals the enigma of other itihasa, purana such as Bhagavatha, Ramayana, Harivamsha, etc., It is a wholesome treatise of these itihasa, purana.

If Mahabharatha is the object, this is its image. Madhwacharya is a great mentor who, through his Sarva Moola texts, unveiled the profound thoughts of the spiritual world spearheaded by Vedas. His Yamaka Bharata is a gist of his own Mahabharata Tatparya Nirnaya. In the real sense, it is Anu Tatparya Nirnaya. It has the same status as his Anu Bhashya a companion of his Brahma Sootra Bhashya.

In Bhagavatha, there is a statement that the teaching -preaching of Mahabharatha is a magic-wand which converts society towards godliness. Its story and the traits of its various characters have become the idioms of the common people and are in currency in everyday usage. In recent times, its range is so widespread that an incident of political nature aimed at capturing a gang of antisocials was code-named "operation Duryodhana". However, it is a matter of regret that the discourses about this great epic are becoming a rarity in recent times.

It is my good fortune that I got an opportunity under the aegis of our Vyasa Madhwa Samshodhana Pratishtana to deliver lectures on Mahabharata at the Vijaya Bharati school Bangalore from 9.6.2003 to 16.04.2006. Even before that, at the holy feet of Lord Krishna at Udupi and under the benign courtesy of His Holiness Shri Vidya Manya Tirtha - the pontiff of Palimaru - Bhandarakeri Mutt - I had the great fortune of delivering a series of lectures on Mahabharata with the backdrop of Madhwacharya's Mahabharatha Tatparya Nirnaya.

The revered pontiff who sponsored these lectures, once again graced me with an opportunity to deliver them for an uninterrupted 63 days during his Chaturmasya period in Bangalore in 1995. I am indeed grateful to him. Apart from this, I have had the good fortune of delivering these lectures in various towns and cities of the country at holy platforms such as Madhwa Sangha. Raghavendraswamy Mutt etc. The opportunity of delivering the lectures at the Vijaya Bharathi school is my most recent fortune.
