About the Book The popular art tradition of printmaking by woodblock in Bengal took a wide area of human experience in its stride. Very a few researches have been done on woodcut printing artistry of Calcutta. The art of making prints from wooden block was brought in India from Europe by the European colonizers and the Bengali artisans gave a new style and starkness to the art. There are not many instances of woodcut illustrations, yet the illustrations that survived the toll of time indicate that the Bengali woodcut artists by their sheer strength of skill left an appeal to the art connoisseurs of all times. They produced art not for a particular class but for the entire community. The trajectory of woodcut printing in Calcutta needs historical understandings.

About the Author Basupurna Mukherjee is an Assistant Professor of Seth Soorajmull Jalan Girls' College. She has done her Doctorate in History from the University of Calcutta under the supervision of Professor Hasi Banererjee. Her area of interest is the nineteenth-twentieth centuries Bengal.
