The curtain of time has fallen on one of the most remarkabale personalities of Modern India. MGR thought and felt with the masses and for the masses. Mr. Ramachandran was a charismatic leader whose life pulsated: with the common people. MGR's passing away is a national: loss and my sorrow at his demise merges with the people of Tamil Nadu.
It was bitter cold in Delhi, the day M.G. Ramachandran collapsed and died of heart attack in Madras, on December 24, 1987. The news of his sudden departure brought an even greater chill to the people of Tamil Nadu and of course, India and the whole Tamil speaking areas. A staunch follower of C.N. Annadurai, MGR devoted his entire life to the service of the Motherland and became the symbol of all that is best in Indian culture. His humanity and patriotism will for ever be remembered.
In the demise of MGR, the Nation has lost one of the outstanding regional leaders of India, symbolising unity in diversity and highest sense of nationalism and patriotism. More so, he was the most beloved charismatic leader of the masses. He worked for them. He distributed his hard earned money in the cinema field, to the poor pavement dwellers, rickshaw-wallas and needy women and children. He was not embodiment of self deceit to be unconscious of the fact, that he reached the pinnacle of glory only because of their patronage implementation of massive welfare measures for the cause of the weaker sections and, schemes for multi dimensional development, and progress of the State, speak volumes about his personalities.
""En rathatin rathamaana udanpirappugale"" (my blood brothers and sisters) was how M.G. Ramachandran used to begin his address to his audience.
