Book Description
From the CD :

One of the brightest stars in the firmament of the Indian classical music, Kumar Gandharva was a vocalist known for his revolutionary spirit. He was a path breaker and trendsetter in many spheres of the classical music.

Kumar Gandharva was born on 8 April 1924 at Sulebhavi village, Belgaun, Karnataka. His father Siddharamayaa was the head of the Komkali Matth. Therefore, the boy was named Shivaputra Komkali. Once one Shrigurukal Matth Swami, on listening to Shivaputra's singing exclaimed with amazement, “He seems to be an incarnation of a Gandharva (Divine singer of the Heaven)!” Since then, Shivaputra Komkali came to be known as Kumar Gandharva. He was trained by professor Deodhar in classical vocal music for eleven years. Kumar Gandharva also learnt from Anjani Bai Malpekar. Due to health reasons he had to shift to Dewas, Madhya Pradesh.

Although connected with the Gwalior gharana, Kumar Gandharva had his own distinctive style of singing, which was a blend of classical and folk music. His music was not born out of riyaz but blossomed out of his own introspection and musical meditation. Whatever composition he sang or created was highly aesthetic and full of sensitivity-whether it was a classical bandish, bhajan or a folk song. While performing, he would invest his renditions with unique newness and excellence and mesmerize his audiences.

A recipient of a fellowship from the sangeet natak academy Kumar Gandharva was also honoured with the Padma Bhushan and D Litt, from the Vikram University.

This album features Kumar Gandharva's soul stirring renditions of raga Bhimpalasi, raga Shree and raga Malkauns.
