M y earliest childhood memories are of winter evenings curled up beside my grandmother listening to stories from the epics, folktales, and her experience living in an ever-expanding joint family in Dehra Dun.
I looked forward to our special time every evening. Sometimes her stories would be long and rambling and I would drift off to sleep; at other times, I would hear her gentle snoring and knew that the story was laid to rest for the night.
It was not the story itself but the way she told it that lingered with me. Now with my two grandchildren, I find myself telling them that a story starts from the head, but the heart tells it.
In this collection of short stories, the common threads are that of friendship, love, wonder, and adventure. My hope is that these stories will appeal to children and adults alike.
I would like to thank my husband Subhash Kak for his support and encouragement during the writing of this book.
