The History of India is a heroic saga of ceaseless toil, turmoil and struggle in the social, economic, political and spiritual fields against the forces of conservatism, darkness, decadence and alien hordes that invaded this country and established their dominion over it for limited periods of time.
Of these alien rulers, the last were the British, who established their sway over the country after the 1857 struggle and ruled it till 1947.
Many personalities were thrown up during this time to guide the destiny of India towards emancipation. Among these stalwarts was Mahadeo Govind Ranade. Tall, brilliant, strong and courageous, Ranade received his education in Poona and Bombay. Beginning his life as Marathi Translator in the Education Department of the Government of Bombay, he became in turn Karbhari (or Administrator) of Akkalkote State, Nyayadhish (or Judge) at Kolhapur and finally a judge of the Bombay High Court.
Simultaneously he espoused all progressive movements and worked indefatigably particularly for social reforms like widow remarriage, education of women and education of the masses generally. He made a profound study of such diverse subjects as philosophy, religion, literature, history and economics.
The author has succeeded eminently in projecting in this book the personality of Ranade in its various facets, so that the scholar-poet emerges as a harmonised entity and born leader whose memory people will proudly cherish for many a long year.
