SAADAT HASAN MANTO is the most widely read short-story writer in Urdu. In his time, he was also the most controversial. A pre-eminent practitioner of the genre, he produced twenty-two collections of short stories.
ISMAT CHUGHTAI was one of the most courageous and controversial women writers of the twentieth century. Her most celebrated short story, The Quilt, which is included in this publication, was brought to court on charges of obscenity for its suggestion of homosexuality. Chughtai refused the court's request to apologize for the story, and eventually won the case.
